FAQs about industrial racking

Does racking need inspecting?

Yes. Pallet racking does need inspecting, according to the HSE. It needs to inspect that your racking is being used properly. Your rack must be highly visible, cause no danger to any staff using or working around the equipment, and never be overloaded to hold excessive stock.

Does warehouse racking need to be certified?

No, it does not need to be certified. However, HSE has set official guidelines in HSG76, and there is government advice which recommends that you should get a racking inspection by an approved inspector. This should happen once a year for warehouse equipment in the UK.

Do any checks happen after the installation?

Yes, a thorough racking installation inspection must happen once the equipment has been installed. Only a qualified inspector should be assigned to carry out this. They will perform a complete inspection to ensure that each part is assembled correctly and follows the health and safety guidelines.

How high can pallet racking go?

“The maximum height should be no more than six times the narrowest dimension of the bottom pallet” is a statement from the HSE. But that does depend on the design of the pallet.

Any storage racks that are taller than 5 foot 9 do require a permit.

The National Fire Prevention Agency also states that stacks shouldn’t be higher than 15’ high or be more than 400 square foot. But you should also check with your insurance provider as to what they consider to be safe with regards to fire risk and protection.

How often should pallet racking be inspected?

HSE reports that a rack inspection should happen once a year, and it should only be an approved racking inspector that does this.

What are the racks in a warehouse called?
