Most frequently asked questions:

What is the best lighting temperature for a warehouse?

The best temperature range for ceiling lights in a warehouse is between 4000K and 5000K because this gives you a suitable light temperature for the room.

What lights are used in warehouses?

There are two types of lights that warehouses generally use.

  1. Linear fluorescent lamps

  2. Metal halide lamps

No warm up time needed for LED

  • Metal halide lamps can take a good 20 minutes to get the light to its full power. That's why big stadiums and arenas need to turn their lights on well in advance.

  • A short warm up time means you're also not paying when the lamp warms up, to further help with savings.

  • The standard electric lamps are often less efficient at low power.

  • Stadiums in the UK and the US have already started making the switch to LED lighting, as Forbes reports.

LED makes switching on and off easy

  • When you turn a metal halide lamp off, it may take up to 20 minutes to get it back to full power. So you'd end up leaving them on even when you need them less because it would cost more to turn them off and on again.

  • You can turn LED warehouse lights off and on instantly. When it turns back on, it's straight back to the full power you want it at, so no unnecessary electricity use.

LED gives you dimmed lighting, efficiently

  • LEDs create more bright and efficient space than halide lights when they're not at full power.

  • Your LEDs lifespan grows when not used at full power - utilise the range to brighten the room as you need.

  • LED lighting has been called "smart lighting", as described by Philips-Hue. because they can be automatically switched off by using a motion detector or timer. Also known as 'adaptive lighting', it saves cost in the long run.

How many lumens do I need for warehouse?

Your ideal lumen should be around 10 lumens per square feet, if your warehouse handles larger stock.

This increases to 30 lumens per square feet if you're handling items that aren't as big.

LED lamps typically has a rated life of 12-25 years, with savings up to 80%. Whereas, standard lights can last 1 year and not amount to any savings.

What is the minimum lighting required by OSHA?

The minimum lighting required for the workplace is 5-foot-candles. For warehouses and similar areas, the requirement is 10ft-c.

For manned warehouse aisles, the level required is 100-200 lux, and for warehouse loading bays 300-400 lux.

What is a foot candle of light?

A foot candle is one lumen per square foot, or ft-c. To calculate your foot candle of light, do 'room length' x 'room width' = room square footage.

How many LED light do I need?

'room square footage' x 'room foot candle requirement' = lumens needed.

What types of buildings can I have LED warehouse lighting installed in?

You can have LED lights in:

  • standardised warehouses with wide aisles

  • VNA racking warehouses (Very Narrow Aisle)

  • Bigger logistics and distribution centres

Are LED lights cost effective for my warehouse?

The initial set up costs of LED warehouse lighting can be more costly than using a normal bulb system. But they do turn out to be much cheaper in the long run.

  • They are more efficient - using less electricity

  • They have a longer lamp time - and less maintenance costs

Are LED light fittings safe for my warehouse staff?

Yes. In fact, LED lamps can lead to higher productivity as well as to create the right atmosphere, which means better stock flow and sales for your business.

Choosing the right warehouse lighting is key because safety for your staff is your priority. Good quality LEDs will shine a natural, but useful level of light to your workers.

They should be able to clearly see all items and any paperwork they need to successfully complete workforce tasks.

Signage and paperwork

Walkways, stairs and all fire exits should be easy to see. LED lamps allow staff to see and access them safely, without having the uncomfortable glare of traditional ceiling lights.

Whether your staff will need to move stock around or read / sign paperwork, this requires good lighting, with the right colour and design.

How far apart should LED lights be?

Generally, the industry rule is to divide your ceiling height by 2. This gives you the space you need between each of your lights. For example, if your ceiling is 10 foot high, your lights should be 5 foot apart from each other. This will vary subject to the bulb style.
